See the difference we make to horses lives.
Indian Gift (Indi)
Indian Gift (stable name Indi) is a 16.1hh mare that came to French’s as a 12 year old. Indi raced as a filly and was trained in Newmarket, as a coming 4 year old she went to stud and we believe had 3 foals. Indi was then sold on privately to a man who wanted to hunt her, but unfortunately, he had no experience of riding or horse management. On losing interest, he turned her away into a small paddock where she stayed for approximately 18months on her own with very little human contact and no other animals in sight. Having received calls from people who knew that the mare was being neglected and that owner intended to have her shot, Jann approached the owner and had her signed over to French's on 01 January 2012. We were told by the owner that Indi was surplus to requirements! When Indi arrived at French's she was found to be under weight, in poor condition and noticeably depressed. Indi is now fully up to weight, happy, and best friends with her field companions Faith and Lady. Faith Healer "Faith Healer" is a 16hh mare that came to French’s as a 10 year old who ran 38 races as a 2/3 year old in her racing career, with some success and 1st placings, but she soon became classed as "not fast enough" so the owner decided to bred from her. Faith was prepared and ready to go to stud when the owner made the decision not to go ahead. Faith then stayed at a livery yard where she was retired at the age of 3. For 8 years she had been kept in a field on 24-7 turnout, because we were told she wasn't happy being stabled or being handled on a yard, as she stressed considerably. The owner spoke to a Newmarket vet about putting her down as he was moving to Dubai and no longer wanted her. It was at this point that the Vet contacted Jann as she had read about Jann’s work at Rossdales Veterinary Practice in Newmarket, and thought that Jann could help save the mare. Jann agreed to help and the owner and vet arranged for Faith to be delivered and signed over to French's. The vet involved was pleased with the decision for Faith to come to French's, since she was reluctant to see the mare go to the wrong person, or be needlessly destroyed. Faith will spend the rest of her time here at the Sanctuary and is now happy and settled when in a stable or on the yard. Lytton Lytton is a 16.hh gelding who arrived at French's in July 2011 as a 6 year old. Lytton had a successful racing career, but due to the unfortunate collapse of the syndicate who owned him, he was then sold. Lytton was bought by a private owner who had him for a matter of months, in this time he injured himself in the field, and was left with strained and torn muscles. These problems were in his hind end and neck. After a year of many Bowen treatments and a long rest, Lytton is looking the picture of perfect health! He has been brought on slowly since he came to French's, after showing great signs of improvement he was then long-reined to build up his strength. Lytton has progressed well in health, strength and education and is now being ridden. We hope that he will be one of the members of French's Horse Sanctuary that will still have a fun career in the future. Coco Coco came to French’s as a 3 year old gelding in 2012. He was no longer wanted by his owners because he had been diagnosed with a heart murmur. Coco is only 11.hh but asserts his authority in the field. He is cheeky and loves attention. Even though he is in a field with the big boys his size seems to be irrelative, he puts the other boys in their place if they over step the mark. The Vets said he can be lightly ridden, so in 2013 he was backed, and is doing well with a rider on board. Coco came to the Hadleigh show with us as our mascot when we were fund raising, and he loved every minute of the attention. He is a good boy that is full of life and is a cheeky, happy chap. Morgan Morgan is a 16.hh mare who came to French’s as a 15year old. Morgan was due to be shot the week we rescued her. She started life as a race horse and was sold on to a private owner due to not being fast enough on the race course. Race horses tend not to be turned out to graze once they start there racing career, which is mostly as a two year old. Morgan’s history shows that throughout her life she had been shut in a stable 23 hours a day with no grass turn out, this in turn lead her to kicking at the walls of her stable in frustration. This then lead to her damaging her hocks, then due to the pain in her hocks she needed medication, which was costly. Along side of this, her temperament changed as would be expected. She become very unhappy and did not like any contact at all from people. Because of the expense of veterinary care and the total lack of experience from her 60 year old female owner, the decision was made to end Morgan's life. Jann received calls and emails to rescue Morgan from people in Surrey, along with a prompted donation to the horse sanctuary. Morgan was transported to French’s almost immediately. Since being with us Morgan has been turned away in a field for the summer with the other mares so that she can feel the freedom a horse should feel and wind down without too many restrictions. When the winter arrives Morgan will have to be stabled at night. A stable has been prepared for her which should meet her specialist needs and where she will be happy and comfortable. Jack Jack is a 17.2hh gelding who came to Jann as a rescue some years ago. In 2013 Jack was 21 years old. Jack use to be a Show Jumper, he had jumped Internationally in his younger years. Jack sub-stained injuries through his job and was going to be shot due to suspensory problems in his hind legs. Jacks hind legs are not good and he does have to have medication now for the rest of his life, but he is a happy bright horse that is up to weight and enjoys being out in the day with his friends and in the comfort of his stable and big hay nets at night. Jack has a wonderful presence on the yard, he is a gentle giant that does not have a bad done in his body personality wise. Every one that meets him falls in love with him, he is a dear boy who has a gentle soul. |
